Village Eco Shop opened by Prince Charles

Ice Energy MD Andrew Sheldon meeting Prince Charles at the opening of the Brockweir & Hewelsfield Eco Village Shop.

Village Shop of the Future
The Brockweir & Hewelsfield shop is made of green oak construction insulated with 10 inches of fiberglass, an infrared reflective layer and plasterboard. The internal floor area is approximately 160m² and has ground floor volume of 420m³ and first floor volume of 470m³ approximately.
The ground floor has a thermally insulated concrete base in which the heating pipes are embedded and the first floor has heating pipes between the joists.
The heat pump was switched on 14th November 2003. A watt-hour meter was fitted later to record all the electricity used by the heat pump including all the circulating pumps involved in the complete system.
During the period 20 Dec 03 to 28 Feb 04 (72 days), the total consumption was 2012 units, an average of 27.9 units per day. This is despite many days when the doors had been left open as work on the shop was still in progress. Some days even the windows had been left open when plaster on the walls was drying.
The performance of the heat pump was very satisfactory and maintained a ground floor air temperature within +/- 2°C in spite of opening doors and windows. The shop's projected electricity consumption by the heat pump for 2004 was approximately 6000 kWh.
