Neil Hart set out to build a property in an area of outstanding natural beauty with exceptional views which he could use for holiday lets. The detached house which is in an isolated and exposed location in North West Scotland certainly fits the bill and is heated by an Ice Energy ground source heat pump. Read on to find out more.
What prompted you to investigate heat pumps?
“Renewable energy and heat pumps seemed the natural way forward and the building magazines suggested it was a smart move. I was also worried about being held to ransom over the cost of heating oil.”
How did you find the installation process?
“The installation process was challenging but satisfying.
“The ground source heat pump was installed on a single phases basis using the slinky method (coiled pipes) within two 38 metre trenches, each one a metre deep and one metre apart. In total, 300 metres of 32mm pipe was installed along with a DVB 300 IVT mains pressure hot water tank.
“Because hard rock (gneiss) made excavation difficult, coils were mostly laid in a natural valley which was subsequently backfilled with peat.
“I have underfloor heating in screed on the ground floor with Thermoskirt radiators on the first floor.”
What has it been like living with your heat pump?
“The system is brilliant. The room temperatures react far quicker to adjustment than I would have thought possible. We have three power showers and have never run out of hot water.”
Have you applied for the Renewable Heat Incentive?
“Yes although because of metering requirements due to the nature of the property being used for holiday lets, I have yet to receive confirmation of the payments I will receive.”
What are the benefits of ground source heat pumps in your opinion?
“This is the first house I have had with underfloor heating and a heat pump. There are no cold spots and the heat provides for all round comfort without that dryness and fatigue often associated with radiators.”
Why did you choose Ice Energy as your heat pump provider?
“I had read about Ice Energy in Mark Brinkley’s ‘House Building Bible’. Ice Energy are the market leaders and were well established.”
What has the service been like from Ice Energy and would you recommend them to others?
“A good company is only ever as good as the productsand service they supply. The Ice Energy product and service has been excellent and I have already recommended Ice Energy to many people.”
