Andy Beddow was paying approximately £2,000 a year to heat his Warwickshire home with an oil boiler so contacted Ice Energy to see how their range of heat pumps could help. Read on to find out more.

What prompted you to investigate heat pumps?
“We hated being reliant on oil, oil deliveries and being held to ransom by fluctuating oil prices. We were also keen to introduce environmental improvements."

How did you find the installation process?
“The installation process was good with Ice Energy providing a project manager to ensure our internal upgrades were coordinated with the installation of the Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pump solution they specified. Overall, the installation took around 2 weeks."

What has it been like living with your heat pump?
“The heat pump runs itself with no intervention and the performance has been superb. We just leave the system permanently running with everything being controlled by an internal thermostat.”

Have you applied for the Renewable Heat Incentive?
“Yes. The process is fine as long as you have all the required paperwork in place such as the Ice Energy commissioning document and associated MCS number, the Green Deal document and an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC). You also had to have to hand all costs and a breakdown between labour and equipment.

"With these to hand / in place, the application process took place online with an instantaneous result.”

What are the benefits of ground source heat pumps in your opinion?
“Cost savings, no more oil storage considerations, space saving in the garage, quieter than the boiler and with no smell. It's a really clever solution that has the added benefit of being an environmentally sound solution.”

Have you an example of the cost savings your heat pump has produced?
"We were paying about £2,000 per annum for oil and electricity. Our costs are now £1,300 per annum for all heating and electricity."

Why did you choose Ice Energy as your heat pump provider?
“Most companies wanted to sell us pellet boilers which in our opinion have many disadvantages as very much like oil, you are reliant on a good supply and have to cater for storage.

"Ice Energy focus on heat pumps and despite the RHI incentives not being as large as biomass at the time, we were given balanced advice and options for consideration. They were happy for us to visit their showroom near Oxford and also surveyed our premises, making clear what upgrades to our existing radiators would be needed.

"They also offered, and subsequently trained our local plumber so that he could install our air source heat pump in line with their recommendations.”

What has the service been like from Ice Energy and would you recommend them to others?
“Very good. We had an initial issue with the immersion heater overheating and causing the system to lock and alarm. This was swiftly dealt with and was as a result of the manufacturer upgrade having implications on how the system should have been wired. Ice discovered this and without any debate, came out and rewired the solution.

"Ice Energy clearly invest in both engineering and service support. This investment / care is apparent when dealing with them. All the individuals we have dealt with have been informed, professional and supportive. Indeed, I had doubts that the heat pump system would keep us warm in the winter but Ice made a statement that effectively, they would upgrade free of charge if their solution did fall short in some way. It has not.

"As a result, I would certainly recommend Ice Energy and their heat pumps to others and am happy to be a reference point for others considering these systems.”
