Heat Pumps Case Study: Air Source Heat Pump Replacing Gas in Oxfordshire

Property type: 4-bedroom detached house in West Oxfordshire built circa 1990

Product installed: 14kW Mitsubishi air source heat pump complimented by a 16 panel, 4kW solar pv installation

Installation date: June 2013 (heat pump), December 2013 (solar PV system)

Distribution system: Brand new radiators throughout

RHI benefit: £6,510 over seven years
In June 2013 Oxfordshire resident Michael Wood upgraded his central heating system with one of Ice Energy's Mitsubishi Ecodan air source heat pumps. He is already receiving £930 a year in Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) payments after making an online application which was approved immediately as he had all his documents available.

What prompted you to investigate air source heat pumps?
"I had a long-standing desire to incorporate the best air source heat pump technology into a house that we had just purchased. I had previously had a solar PV system in Portugal for three years which benefitted from 3,000 Euro's income each year from solar energy."

How did you find the installation process?
"I wasn't in the property during the air source heat pump installation which took less than 4 weeks to complete and included a brand new central heating system. I had to co-ordinate with the installers, Steve Cross Heating and Plumbing to get the major plumbing and electrical works completed within that period.

"The installation of the solar PV panels was not intrusive at all and took 2 days to complete."

What has it been like living with your air source heat pump?
"The system is simplicity itself. No user intervention is required except to set the required temperature on the thermostat. My air source heat pump system maintains a constant temperature at my chosen value of 24 degrees."

What would you say are the benefits of air source heat pumps?
"After a year I checked how many units of electricity I had used and then calculated the costs at current rates. I was pleasantly surprised that the energy cost was over £200 less than the £1,680 that I receive in Renewable Heat Incentive and Feed-in-Tariff grants so free energy for the next seven years."

How have you benefitted from the Renewable Heat Incentive?
"The online application for the RHI was very simple and was approved at the end of the application process. The RHI awarded for my air source heat pump is £930 per annum providing a total of £6,510 over seven years."

Why did you choose Ice Energy to provide your air source heat pump?
"My decision was based on the reputation of Ice Energy. In my experience it would be difficult to find a better qualified and customer focused supplier."

What has the service been like from Ice Energy and would you recommend them to others?
"The service has been excellent and I would most certainly recommend Ice Energy to others."
