What are Plate Underfloor Heating Systems?

Plate systems can be used with timber suspended floors where a mechanical fixing is required for a wooden floor. The system requires insulation to be fixed between the joists, tight against the underside of the aluminium plate to prevent the downward passage of heat.

Our first preference is to specify a cross batten plate system, this eliminates the need to notch the structural joist. However if you are experiencing height restrictions fixing the plates direct onto the joists would be an alternative.

Which Plate Systems do Ice Energy Supply?

Ice Energy provide a variety of underfloor heating systems suitable for Standard Plate installation both on a bespoke or kit form basis. Our systems are available for use with heat pumps or boilers and full specifications can be provided on request.

Standard Plate

This system is typically Aluminium plates fixed to joists with our PEX pipe laid within the plate to aid the in the conductivity of the heat. Notching will be required in order for the pipe to pass over the joists. This must be carried out by a competent person. Standard Aluminium plates are 1000mm x 390mm, this allows for a gap between each plate. The plates must not touch each other under any circumstances. This system requires insulation boards to be cut and fixed directly beneath the plate to prevent any downward heat loss.

Cross Battened Plate

This system is typically 20mm battens fixed at 400mm centres, 90 degrees to the existing joists. The heat is transmitted in the same way as a Standard Plate system using Aluminium plates. This system requires insulation boards to be cut and fixed directly beneath the cross batten or as close to the plate as possible to prevent any downward heat loss.

Cross battening ensures that a uniform distance to suit the diffuser plates can be achieved and eliminates the need for notching the structural joists.

Cross battened plate systems are always our preference for first and second floors however, on ground floors there is usually a ventilated void so our PUG system would be preferable.

What is a Cross Battened Plate on Timber Floor Underfloor Heating System?

This system is typically used where an existing timber deck cannot be lifted. Battens are generally fixed across the timber deck to allow for the Aluminium plates to be fixed. The heat is transmitted in the same way as our Standard Plate system.

Which Cross Battened Plate Systems for Timber Floors do Ice Energy Supply?

Ice energy recommends the Cross Battened plate system where floor finishes require mechanical fixing.

Our systems are available for use with heat pumps or boilers and full specifications can be provided on request.
